About dr. Karin Hermans
Karin Hermans is an experienced child psychiatrist working in Curaçao at the Antilles Psychiatrist Affiliation.
After studying medicine at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands dr. Hermans returned to her native island Curaçao where she worked for three and a half years as a school doctor. Her work included giving primary health care to children. She however observed different social problems that were affecting the children’s performance in school. This inspired her to give more professional and scientific attention to this aspect and that is how she went to work as a psychiatry assistant in the only psychiatric hospital in the Netherlands Antilles: the Capriles Clinic.
During this time, she also did an extensive investigation on eating disorders in Curaçao, based on cross class and social levels. Her focus in this investigation was on the reality of women and food and how this controlled their lives.
Dr. Hermans returned after that to The Netherlands where she specialized to become a child and adolescent psychiatrist. She got additional experience in The Netherlands while developing a forensic psychiatry department for children with mild mental retardation.
Her call however is to be at service on her island and that was the reason that dr. Hermans returned to Curaçao where she is treating and handling children and adolescent who need her specific medical service.
Her latest project is the development of a child and adolescent psychiatry center in Curaçao.
Dr. Hermans is aware that problems start for many women later in life because of the lack of proper mental and medical attention when they were growing up.
